...it devours.

Or at least it would like to.

My second piece for :icon-coey-: and :iconshysuiko:'s contest. I know there are some really stunning entries, but I'm glad I could get it done (just under the wire). Please check out their stuff, it's worth the look.

This is probably one of my most complex pieces to date (at least in terms of environment) and while there are things that could be better, over all I'm very happy about it.

The characters belong to Coey and Shy.

Thank you. I think it came a long way, but as stated, there's still a lot of room for improvement. But it's a start. :)

The monster is great, obviously especially the mouth. I like the foreground a lot. I'm not so sure about the tunnel perspective, and I sort of fell it was more dynamic somehow in the initial sketch. Maybe I just don't need my attention drawn away from them, to the upper right.

But like I said, I like the foreground scene and the colors and the mouth.

I'm glad you like the mouth since it was such a problem area. But I'm sorry if you feel like it didn't live up to your expectations from the sketch. I haven't done perspective in forever, so it took me a while. The light at the end of the tunnel was supposed to double duty as an unusual light source (in the sense of backlighting) and be symbolic of hope of escape being far away. Perhaps I didn't make it dark enough. But that was the thought originally. I hope you still like the piece as a whole, since I know you were looking so forward to seeing it.

I'm not sure it's a matter of living "up" to my expectations as being different than what was in my head after seeing the sketch. Which isn't to say I could have done that. I think it's natural that I would see something different than you from the initial idea, so my expectations aren't let down so much as altered. I see what you're saying, though. And I do like it, over all.

That Aligator-centipede-sandworm-osaurus is freaking awesome. Great work on the tunnel!

Thank you. The teeth took forever. There was definitely a lot of Dune references trying to figure out how to put them in that much flexible tissue. I'm glad you like it.

I'm really, really impressed with this. I didn't even know this was by you when I saw the thumbnail until I glanced down and read the name. I think the contrast in lighting could be intensified, but the lighting is still really, really good, and the shadows towards the front (bottom of the drawing) are great and spooky. I also think the water is bloody amazing. Especially right to the left of the monster (its right), the ripples look wonderfull realistic. I'm also really impressed with the monster itself - the texture of its skin looks like you could touch it.

The only thing that I'm not impressed with is the two men, who look kind of cartoony, faces especially. Maybe if their eyes were smaller...? And their clothes look like they're balloony Pierrot clothes. It's just not as striking as the rest of it and kind of lessens the impact of the monster since they don't look as realistic.

I understand what you mean. I redid them several times, but was never able to get what I wanted. In the end, I ran out of time. But I'm glad that you're seeing improvement. Maybe next time it'll be even better.
